Troubleshooting

I cannot sign in

Work down this list. It is roughly in order of how often each one is the answer.

Two reasons, and neither is obvious from the error:

  • It expired. A sign-in link is valid for ten minutes. Ask for another.
  • You opened it somewhere else. The link must be opened in the browser that asked for it. That browser holds a secret needed to complete the sign-in, and no other browser has it. A link requested on a laptop and opened on a phone cannot work.

No email arrives at all

Email delivery is not connected yet, so the link may never be sent. This is common enough right now to have its own article: I did not get the email. Password resets are affected the same way, which is why a forgotten password currently needs a message to support rather than the reset form.

The password is refused

Passwords are at least eight characters, and the field is case-sensitive. Check the address too: signing in with a different address than you registered gives the same refusal as a wrong password, deliberately, because a distinct “no such account” message tells a stranger which addresses have accounts.

The two-factor code will not take

  • Your clock. Codes are generated from the time. If your phone’s clock is off by more than a minute, every code it produces is wrong. Turn on automatic time on the device running the authenticator.
  • The code changed while you typed. Wait for a fresh one and enter it promptly.
  • The authenticator is gone. Choose Use a recovery code instead on the same screen — see Recovery codes.

“Sign in with Google” is not there

It is not available, and the button is hidden rather than broken. Use a password or a magic link.

The account was scheduled for deletion

You can still sign in during the fourteen-day grace period, and the account page shows a banner with Cancel deletion. See Export or delete your data.

The account no longer exists

An account whose email address was never verified is deleted seven days after it was created. If yours is past that, signing in fails as though it never existed, because it no longer does. Create it again, or write to us if you think it was verified.

You signed out everywhere and now nothing works

Sign out other sessions keeps the session you used to press it. If you pressed it and then closed that browser, every session is gone and you sign in again as normal — nothing about the account changed.
